I guess this is quite relevant for what’s about to come! Carl Bernstein wrote a ‘few’ years ago, that through the mid-1970s, the CIA built a large, systematic set of covert relationships with US journalists and major news organisations, using them for intelligence collection, operational support, and influence-related objectives. American journalists “secretly carried out assignments” for the CIA over roughly 25 years, ranging from informal cooperation to explicit tasking. Also, foreign correspondence naturally confers access and mobility. Journalists can travel, meet officials, and cultivate sources in government, academia, military and scientific circles in ways that may be difficult for declared officials.

This is about institutional permeability: when a state capability is rewarded for reach and plausible deniability, and a profession is rewarded for access, the overlap becomes predictable unless governance explicitly prevents it.

So, “media integrity” is the public’s reasonable expectation that journalism is independent in purpose, methods, and accountability: that reporters and editors are not covertly acting on behalf of state power while presenting themselves as neutral gatherers of facts. The most modern reading is that “integrity” is an interface contract. When journalism silently becomes a dual-use channel, the whole information ecosystem inherits a hidden dependency and trust collapses in exactly the way Bernstein warns.

What I’m saying is that parts of the media ecosystem can be permeable to state objectives, especially when secrecy is involved, and that this creates a structural reason to treat journalistic authority as evidence-weighted, not faith-based. What can we do then? Well, don’t rely on access journalism (people close to power) for truth without corroboration. Prefer accountability journalism (documents, audits, courts, FOI requests, data) for factual claims. Separate reporting from interpretation. Many outlets do both; integrity depends on labelling and evidence.
